Feng shui is a 4,000-year-old Chinese system that looks at how the energy of your environment affects every area of your life, from your health and sleep to your career, relationships, and finances. Marie explains it not as a mystical or religious practice, but as something far more grounded in quantum physics: the understanding that everything around you is energy, and that energy is constantly giving your subconscious mind a message.

Think about it this way. You spend roughly eight hours sleeping in your bedroom, eight hours in your workspace, and most of your remaining time in your living spaces. Everything you are surrounded by, the colors, the images, the placement of furniture, whether things are cluttered or clear, is sending your subconscious a signal. The question Marie poses is a powerful one: are those signals reflecting who you want to be, or who you used to be?

This is the core idea behind her book title. Your home is already a vision board. It is either working for you or against you. And most of us have never stopped to ask which one it is.

There Is Science Behind the Energy Shift

She references studies including research conducted at the University of Beijing showing that people who sleep in bedrooms with mirrors facing the bed experience measurably higher stress levels, elevated blood pressure, and increased white blood cell counts, meaning more inflammation in the body.

Even more fascinating is the research around brain waves and clutter. When people spend time in a cluttered, chaotic space, brain wave testing shows a rapid shift into beta brain waves, which are associated with anxious, scattered thinking, poor concentration, and less creativity. When those same people declutter the space and are tested again, they shift quickly into alpha brain waves, the state associated with calm focus, optimism, and creative problem-solving. A literal brain state change simply from changing the environment.

Marie also references muscle testing (kinesiology) to demonstrate how the body responds physically to its surroundings. In a cluttered space, the body tests as weaker. In a cleared, organized space, it tests as stronger. This is why so many women feel an almost primal urge to clean out their closets or do a deep declutter at certain points in their lives. That is not just a habit. That is your body asking for something it needs.

Marie’s Own Discovery: How a Bedroom Change Transformed Her Life at 15

Marie’s entry into the world of energy and environment was not academic. It was deeply personal. At 15, she had survived a near-death experience after a series of accidents and found herself asking a mentor why she kept attracting difficulty. Instead of pointing inward, her mentor pointed outward. At her environment.

She was sleeping in a north-facing bedroom with no sunlight. Her mentor suggested she move to a west-facing room and paint it in warm colors. She chose orange. If you are a water person, being near water is not just aesthetically calming. It actually supports your energy field in a measurable way. If you are an earth person, views of hills and natural crystals will feel deeply grounding. And if your partner seems drawn to entirely different environments than you, there is a reason for that too. Opposites tend to attract because they balance each other energetically.

Most of us, especially those with attached garages, habitually enter through the back or side, moving through a cluttered, dimly lit space before stepping into our homes. Marie is direct about the energetic impact of this habit.

When you enter your home through the front door, you are activating your connection with the outside world in a more empowered way. You step into your home as the person who owns and belongs in this space. When you enter through a cluttered garage, past laundry and disorder, the subconscious signal is entirely different.

Her recommendation is simple: use your front door whenever possible, especially for meaningful arrivals and departures. And when you walk through it, make sure you are welcomed by something that reflects who you are and who you want to become. A fresh bouquet of flowers, a family photo, something that communicates this is my home and it celebrates me.

The Bedroom: What Your Sleep Space Is Doing to Your Body

This section of the conversation will have many midlife women reconsidering their entire bedroom setup. Marie’s guidance is specific and, once you hear it, makes immediate sense.

Your bed should be positioned so that when you wake up, you can see the door. This is called a power position, and it creates a sense of safety and calm that registers in the nervous system. The bed should be against a solid wall with a headboard (a symbol of strength and stability), and should have nightstands with lamps on both sides, signaling spaciousness and openness to partnership.

Never put your bed in a corner. Energetically, a corner placement suggests there is only room for one, which can quietly reinforce isolation or block intimacy. And if you have a television or mirrors visible from the bed, cover them at night. Mirrors double the energy of the space, including stress and restlessness. Sleeping without them visible often results in dramatically deeper, more peaceful sleep.

The color conversation around bedrooms is one every midlife woman needs to hear. If your bedroom is heavily decorated in blues, blacks, or dark cool tones, those are water element colors. In a bedroom, too much water energy dampens passion, can increase anxiety, and disrupts the kind of deep restorative sleep that is so critical during the hormonal shifts of perimenopause and menopause. Marie recommends shifting toward earth and metal tones: beiges, creams, warm taupes, soft pinks, peaches, whites, and silvers. These colors calm the nervous system, support rest, and support passion.

The Kitchen, the Car, and Loose Change

Marie’s insights extend into spaces most of us have never thought to examine energetically. In the kitchen, she advises keeping all sharp knives hidden or stored in a block rather than displayed openly. She also points out that loading the refrigerator door with family photos is not as warm as it feels. The refrigerator is cold, and placing your most important relationships there can freeze the energy around those connections. Better to hang family photos in living spaces where warmth and gathering naturally occur.

The car conversation resonated deeply. Marie treats the car as an extension of your body and your home. Loose receipts, empty containers, and scattered coins all communicate to the subconscious that money and energy are not being respected. Her recommendation is to gather loose coins into a beautiful ceramic or gold-colored bowl, either in the car or at your entrance at home, as a symbol of saving and honoring what comes to you. For 2026 specifically, she recommends placing this bowl in the east section of your living room or office to activate money energy during this particular feng shui cycle.

Your Home Is Already Talking to You. Are You Listening?

Perhaps the most powerful moment in this conversation was when Marie described walking through a client’s home and reading the story that the objects and placement were telling. A film producer had a large framed poster from Jaws hanging in her relationship direction. A shark. Open-mouthed. Moving toward a woman swimming. When Marie asked about the quality of her relationships since placing that poster there, the woman said she had consistently attracted men who behaved exactly like sharks.

This is the kind of moment that makes you want to look at every image on every wall of your home. What is it telling you? What story is it reinforcing every single day as you walk past it, sleep near it, or sit beneath it?

Marie’s guidance is simple: if you have had an image hanging for years and it makes you feel something uncomfortable every time you see it, take it down. Your body already knows. It is time to listen.
